In general Aesthetic words means related to beauty. In Medical science it is a generic term and Aesthetic medicine focus on altering cosmetic appearance through the specialized treatment of several conditions which includes scars, moles, wrinkles, liver spots, excess fat, skin discoloration, skin laxity, unwanted hair, and spider veins.  United States is the topmost country around the world which performs most aesthetic procedures globally. Traditionally Aesthetic Procedures includes plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery, and dermatology.  It also includes surgical procedures like breast implants, liposuction, facelifts and non-surgical procedures like chemical peel, radio frequency skin tightening etc.

What is the role of Aesthetic nurse in Aesthetic Medical science?

Undoubtedly, Nursing is an extremely complex, challenging, and versatile field which requires many different types of specialties and skillset. The most common and noticed stuff in any nursing specialty is that they help patients to maintain their overall health and well-being. An aesthetic nurse (also known as cosmetic nurse) usually performs many non-surgical procedures and therapeutics to assist patients in their cosmetic appearance alteration. They monitor the patient’s vital signs and response to the treatment and educate them further on after care of the treatment. Aesthetic nurse role is quite equivalent to a plastic surgery nurse, though they are typically more involved with non-invasive, non -surgical, in-office cosmetic treatments rather than high precision surgical procedures. Aesthetic nurse usually focus on procedures like acne treatments, laser removal, anti-aging fillers and injectables. They are also qualified to provide services including photo facials, tattoo removal, Botox tattoo removal and dermal filler injections to patients.

How To Become an Aesthetic/Cosmetic Nurse

If anyone looking his/her career in Aesthetic Medicine and want to become an Aesthetic Nurse, below are the few steps which needs to be followed:

  • Educational Requirements- The first and foremost important thing is to earn a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or two-year Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from any reputed institute or university.
  • NCLEX-RN Exam- Once you have accredited ADN or BSN degree, once must pass the NCLEX-RN exam to become licensed in their state.
  • MSN Degree – Though it’s not a typical requirement for Aesthetic nurse but if you want to advance in your career and want to opt for Nurse Practitioner (NP) role., it becomes important that you have Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree.

Certified Aesthetic/Cosmetic Nurse Specialist

Though it’s not a mandatory certification but anyone looking to cement their position as one of the best aesthetic/cosmetic nurses must earn the Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist credential through the PSNCB (Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board).  Below are the requirements needed for certification:

  • Must hold a current and active RN license in United States.
  • At least 1,000 hours spent in core competency specialties in the last 2 years.
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience required within any of the four designated core competencies specialty (Plastic/Aesthetic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, or Facial Plastic Surgery). Aesthetic nurse must be working in collaboration with a physician that is Board Certified in any of the four-core specialty.
  • To endorse your application, you must have a supervising core physician

Salary for Aesthetic Nurse

The salary for aesthetic/cosmetic nurses can vary based upon education and geographic location within the country.  It also depends upon their experience and the certifications they hold. According to the BLS report the average annual salary for RN was around $77,600 in 2021. Though the BLS doesn’t report does not specifies salary for aesthetic nurses. Also, its expecting that average requirement for RN will increase by 12 % until 2028 seeing the current upside demand.

As per ZipRecruiter report the average annual pay for a cosmetic nurse is $88,340, though some highly skilled cosmetic nurses are earning as much as $133,000.
