Katherine Sinead Kelly is an English presenter and soap opera actress. Katherine was born on 19 November 1979 in United Kingdom. Katherine debuted on the TV in the year 2003 and she appeared on Last of the Summer Wine.

Initial years

Katherine was born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Her parents are Irish. They are John Kelly and Anne Kelly. Her father is originally from Castleisland, County Kerry, Ireland. Because of this reason, Katherine lived in County Kerry, Ireland for most of her childhood years and spent some years of schooling in America as well. Katherine is also associated with The Lamproom Theatre in Barnsley which was established by her father in the year 1998 and she regularly supports the fund-raising events for the theatre. After completing her high school, Katherine decided to pursue her interest in the field of Arts. When she was 18 years old, she received an opportunity to get training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. She received classical training for three years at RADA. She completed her graduation at RADA in the year 2001 along with her fellow batchmates, Meredith MacNeill, Leo Bill, Elliot Cowan, Laurence Fox, and actor/novelist, Anna Hope.

After completing her graduation, Katherine joined theatre and worked in Royal Shakespeare Company, The National, Donmar Warehouse), Television (Criminal: UK, Cheat, Happy Valley, Mr. Selfridge, Coronation Street), Film (Dirty God, Official Secrets) and Radio (BBC 3 and 4).

Career

Initially, from year 2004 to 2006, Katherine worked in several plays with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The first soap opera in which Katherine Kelly acted was Coronation street and she instantly gained a lot of fame after that. She portrayed the character Becky McDonald in Coronation Street from 2006 until 2012. It is being said that initially, Katherine had a contract for only three months for the soap opera Coronation street but the producers of the show were so impressed with her that later on she was written as a permanent character in the show. She won multiple awards for this including a National Television Award for “Best Serial Drama Performance” in 2012.

There was also an album released in 2010 named as Coronation Street: Rogues, Angels, Heroes & Fools in which Katherine appeared. Katherine, in her character as Becky McDonald, sang “If It’s Too Late” which was the lead single of the album. This song was remixed by former PWL and Stock Aitken Waterman “Mixmaster”, Pete Hammond. 

After leaving Coronation Street, Katherine appeared in the 90-minute BBC Four biopic The Best Possible Taste, in which she portrayed the character of Lee Middleton, wife of Kenny Everett.

Later in the year 2013, Katherine joined the show “The Field of Blood” which was based on the novel by Denise Mina, as the lead cast and played a character named Maloney, an ambitious woman in the “ferociously male-dominated world of 1980s newspaper journalism”. She also worked in the ITV thriller in 2013, “The Guilty” portraying the character as Claire Reid, mother to a missing five-year-old child.

In the same year, Katherine also got an opportunity to play the character of socialite Lady Loxley in the ten-part ITV drama series Mr Selfridge. She also appeared in the second series of the show as well in the year 2014 and the final series in 2016.    

In the year 2014, Katherine portrayed the character Alaura Kingsley in the critically acclaimed production of “City of Angels”, directed by Josie Rourke, at the Donmar Warehouse.

In the next year, August 2015, she worked in the series “Happy Valley” which was aired in the following year. In this series, she portrayed the character of DI Jodie Shackleton. This character was specially written by series creator Sally Wainwright for Katherine and Katherine thoroughly enjoyed playing this character as it was to be played in her native Yorkshire accent. Katherine prepared for the role by shadowing police detectives in Halifax.

In the year 2016, Katherine acted as the Permanent Secretary in four episodes of “The Night Manager”. In the same year, an announcement about Katherine appearing in the BBC “Three Doctor Who spin-off” series, written by Patrick Ness was made. The series was to be aired from October 2016.

Along with it, Katherine also worked in films as well since 2003. In the year 2018, she appeared in the film “Dirty God” in which she portrayed the character Lisa, the protagonist Jade’s mother.

In the next year, Katherine made her appearance in the feature film, named as, “Official Secrets” which was based on the real-life events of intelligence whistle-blower Katharine Gun. In this film, Katherine played the character Jacqueline Jones, an MI6 agent who tacitly confirmed about the legitimacy of Gun’s leaked memo to a journalist contact at The Observer.

In the year 2019 itself, Katherine acted in an episode of Flack, as Brooke. Later that same year, Katherine also portrayed the character Leah in the four-part ITV drama Cheat.  

In the September 2019, Katherine appeared on a Netflix mini-series Criminal: UK and played the role of the lead investigator. 

In the year 2020, Katherine joined the cast of Liar for its second series, portraying the character of Detective Karen Renton.

In the year 2021, Katherine appeared on the film “The last train to Christmas” and played the character named, Paula.

Personal Life

Katherine Kelly met Ryan Clark, an Australian digital analyst, in the year 2011 and the couple dated for 2 years before getting married in Las Vegas in the year 2013.

The couple was happily married for the next few years and welcomed their two adorable daughters in the years 2014 and 2016. They named their daughters Orla Kelly Clark and Rose Christie Kelly Clark. 

In the year 2020, the couple hit a rough patch in their relationship and they decided to get separated in August 2020. After the separation, Katherine relocated from her home in North London to her home town of Barnsley.

Katherine is a successful and famous Soap opera actress. She has been ranked on the list of most popular Soap Opera Actress and is also placed in the elite list of famous celebrity born in the United Kingdom.  

She has won several awards for her wonderful work in the TV as well as film industry. For national Television awards, she was nominated thrice for “Best Serial Drama Performance” award in the years 2008, 2010 and 2011 respectively and she won this prestigious award in the year 2012.

She was also nominated for British soap award for “Best Actress” and “Best Comedy Performance” in the year 2008. In the same year, she was also nominated for the award for “Best On-Screen Partnership” along with David Neilson.

She won “Best Actress” award in the year 2009. For the next few years, she was nominated in various categories for British soap awards for her marvellous work. In the year 2012, she won the award for “Best Exit”.
